I hate to give fodder to the black helicopter crowd, but...
10/23/2002

According to a blogger who lives within a few miles from the home being searched in Tacoma, WA, the two men of interest are a non-citizen and a former U.S. soldier at Fort Lewis. I had heard about the soldier, and I heard both Chief Moose's comment that the "immigrant community" ought not be afraid to come forward and speculation that this is hugely significant, but I hadn't read anybody putting the two pieces together with this loud of a click.

Where do the black helicopters come in? Well, the non-citizen matched with an ex-soldier sounds quite a bit like the story that's finally being taken seriously about a McVeigh-Iraq connection. In fact, McVeigh apparently once used the address "P.O. Box 4221, Fort Lewis, Washington" when renting a room. More generally, a quick search of the Internet will show that McVeigh obviously knew soldiers stationed at Fort Lewis.

Yeah, this link stretches plausibility, but it's rapidly becoming a bizarre, movie-like world.

It is getting bizarre. Since I live about a half hour from the Tacoma site, and drive past Ft. Lewis all the time, it's also gotten scarily close to home. I initially felt certain the shootings were the work of terrorists; then I gravitated towards thinking a disgruntled, disillusioned ex-military man was to blame; just recently, I began to swing back toward terrorists. And now, perhaps *both* types are in league with each other? Would be fascinating, if it were not so terrible.

The more I think about the milita/Iraq/Al Queda connection, the more it makes a certaint degree of sense. Iraq was looking for ways to strike at the United States. What if he took a page from the KGB playbook and searched for "usefull idiots" like Stalin did with labor unions and other leftist groups. What group would you pick in 92? Anti-government types seem the best choice.

Then again, pullin off a conspiracy is difficult enough with a single group of dedicated nutjobs. How could you keep it a secret when you're dealing with two groups with different agendas? As interesting as some of the evidence seems, it still appears to be a bit far fetched. I'll sit on the fence until I know more.

They are a father and stepson and the stepson is apparently from Jamaica. The father is a convert to Islam, apparently, but is of the Louis Farrakhan variety.

Despite what is being said, I doubt that they are worried about Israel or the Palestinians and are more likely a couple of disgruntled losers.

Dan,

I tend to doubt that the September 11 hijackers, even bin Laden, were really all that concerned about Israel and the Palestinians.
